Jaipur: As Jaipur gears up for the Diwali festival, the city police have announced a special traffic plan for the bustling walled city, or Parkote, to help manage the expected surge in shoppers and tourists.

From October 18 to 21, between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m., 100 e-rickshaws will operate free of cost across key routes inside the old city, officials said. The initiative aims to reduce congestion and make travel more convenient for visitors during the festive rush.

Under this plan, no other e-rickshaws will be allowed to enter the walled city, ensuring smoother movement for pedestrians and shoppers.

Jaipur Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph announced the measure after a meeting with trade associations and police officials. He said the decision was taken to maintain order and ease traffic flow during one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.

Shopkeepers from markets such as Johari Bazaar, Badi Chaupar, Tripolia Bazaar, and Bapu Bazaar told officials that foot traffic during Diwali shopping often leads to massive jams and parking chaos, prompting the police to intervene this year with an organized mobility plan.

Defined Routes and Hours

The free e-rickshaw service will connect popular entry and shopping points — Ajmeri Gate, New Gate, Sanganeri Gate, Johari Bazaar, Badi Chaupar, Tripolia, Choti Chaupar, and Bapu Bazaar. The service will run every evening between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. for four days.

Officials said the initiative will not only assist visitors in moving between markets but also reduce the number of private vehicles entering the old city, thereby easing traffic congestion and improving air quality during the festival.

Enhanced Policing and Coordination

The meeting also included Additional Commissioner (Administration and Traffic) Yogesh Dadhich, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sumit Mehra, and Jaipur Vyapar Mahasangh president Subhash Goyal, along with representatives from various traders’ associations.

The police have assured that additional personnel will be deployed across all major intersections and market areas to maintain law and order and ensure a safe and smooth shopping experience.
