Jaipur: Elderly patients who come to seek treatment at Jaipur’s Sawai Man Singh (SMS) hospital will be happy with a new initiative undertaken by the hospital.

These patients will not have to run around the hospital for treatment with the inauguration of a new ward that will address their concerns. Doctors from all units will be available at this new geriatric ward thereby considerably decreasing the trouble faced by such patients.

The geriatric ward at SMS is the first of its kind in the state. It was inaugurated by Health minister Kalicharan Saraf. The ward has been set up at Dhanvantri OPD Block in the Hospital complex. The head of this unit is Dr. Laxmikant Goyal.

OPD services will be provided in this ward every week on Mondays and Fridays. SMS hospital treats a large number of patients as it is one of the few government super-speciality hospitals in the state. One of the biggest hospitals in northern India, SMS witnesses about 8,000 to 10,000 patients every day. There are more than 2,100 beds in the hospital.

Geriatric wards provide dedicated acute care for elderly people. Some of the key features of such wards includes shared care between physicians, geriatricians and their multidisciplinary teams, optimal medical and nursing care of patients through integrated geriatric assessment. It also includes early discharge planning, including timely referral to appropriate community services.
