Jaipur: Notorious dacoit Jagan Gurjart surrendered before the police on Friday, nearly 10 days after he allegedly stripped the women of a family and paraded them necked in a village in Dholpur district. Sources said that he surrendered fearing that the police would kill him in an encounter. He was being searched in the Chambal ravines for the past few days. Some of his associates had been arrested by the police. The cops announced a cash reward of Rs 40,000 for any information leading to his arrest.

Sources said that he was brought to SP Dholpur office by a team of police headed by DSP Parmal Gurjar. A rifle was seized from his possession.

MP Hanuman Beniwal had raised the issue of the dacoit’s terror in Dholpur villages in the parliament recently. He demanded that the dacoit be gunned down by the police.

He said that there are more than 150 criminal cases including murder, loot and dacoity registered against him, but he has already been released in more than 70 of these cases. He added that nobody comes forward and becomes a witness against him in the courts. As a result, he gets exonerated.

On the night of June 19, Jagan and his aides had attacked a family in a Dholpur village. As the men from the family were not home, Jagan stripped the women and beat them up. He then allegedly paraded them in the village.

Several police teams were formed to nab the dacoit who went into hiding in Chambal ravines after the incident. Senior police officer including ADGs and IGs reached Dholpur to supervise the police operation. Jagan feared that he would be killed in an encounter so he surrendered.
