Jaipur: Member of Parliament (MP) from Nagaur constituency and RLP chief Hanuman Beniwal tested positive for COVID-19. While it is under investigation as to how Beniwal contracted the virus, the case has become an eye-opener for politicians who are becoming increasingly vulnerable to the pandemic as social distancing guidelines are being openly flouted in the political circle these days.

Amid the allegations and counter-allegations over the horse trading of MLAs and conspiracy to topple the government, many political leaders are struggling to follow social distancing norms. Protests and demonstrations are being held across the state.

Beniwal informed his followers on Twitter on Sunday evening that he had developed COVID-19 symptoms and had himself tested. He tested positive for the virus, while his wife tested negative. He appealed that whoever came in contact with him in the past 10 days should have themselves tested and those who had been in close contact with him should put themselves in self-quarantine.

Ever since the conflict between Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and sacked Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot came to fore, there has been large political gathering at hotels and other places. A party is organizing protests at all district headquarters in the state.

The state reported 448 new COVID-19 cases till 10 am on Monday. The total number of cases has gone up to 36,878 in the state. The number of active cases has also crossed the 10,000-mark. It now stands at 10,124. The COVID-19 death toll has reached 631.
