Jaipur: A 22-year-old MBBS student was found hanging at the New RD Hostel of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College in Jaipur in the early hours of Saturday, hours before he was due to sit for a forensic medicine paper, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Nitin Yadav, a resident of Alwar, who had been living in a rented flat with four friends near Naila House (20 Dukan) for the past three years while pursuing his MBBS degree. His father, Arjun Singh, is a commando with the Border Security Force.
According to Rajesh Sharma, station house officer of SMS police station, Nitin had been studying with friends at the SK Menon Hostel, the undergraduate hostel on the campus, on Friday night and left around 2 am, telling them he was returning to his flat. CCTV footage instead showed him entering the New RD Hostel, the postgraduate hostel, at about 2.45 am.
Police said the student was visible in CCTV footage on the seventh floor till 2.51 am and on different parts of the building till 3.15 am. The eighth floor, where the body was eventually found, is not covered by CCTV cameras. A female security guard spotted the body at around 5.30 am, and police were informed at 6.30 am. The body was lowered in the presence of a Forensic Science Laboratory team.
No suicide note was recovered. A smartphone and a laptop were found at the spot. Hostel staff told police the student had carried the rope into the building inside his laptop bag, the SHO said.
The New RD Hostel is a multi-storey building in which the second, third and fourth floors house male postgraduate students and the fifth, sixth and seventh floors are reserved for women, while the eighth floor opens onto the roof. Family members have questioned how an undergraduate student was permitted entry into a postgraduate hostel.
Nitin’s maternal uncle Amrit, who described him as a bright and level-headed student, told reporters that his nephew had not even spoken to the family on the phone for the past two days as he was preparing for his examination, and rejected the suggestion that he could have taken his own life.
