Lobbying begins for new Jaipur mayor; Manoj Bhardwaj, Vishnu Lata among frontrunners

Jaipur: After BJP leader Ashok Lahoti was elected as an MLA from Sanganer constituency in Jaipur, the lobbying for the new mayor of Jaipur has begun.

Ashok Lahoty said in a statement that he would soon step down.

Deputy mayor Manoj Bharadwaj and former chairman of the licensing committee Vishnu Lata are considered as the frontrunners for the mayor post, this time.

As per State Municipality Act, if a person while being a member of municipality gets appointed as a legislator, he has to leave the municipal post within 14 days. Lahoty will have to resign from the post by December 24.

In the last five years, this will be the third time when a new Mayor will be appointed in Jaipur. In 2013, Nirmal Nahata was appointed as the mayor of Jaipur but he was removed and replaced by Ashok Lahoty in 2016.

BJP leaders Mohanlal Gupta and Ashok Parnami are the former mayors of Jaipur. Jaipur Mayor is usually gets chosen on the caste equations.

Ashok Lahoti is the second mayor who has been elected MLA during the tenure as a mayor. Earlier Mohanlal Gupta was also elected to the legislative assembly when he was the mayor.

The chairperson of a JMC committee Rakhi Rathore and former mayor Nirmal Nahata are also in the run for the Mayor’s post.
