Jodhpur: Dead bodies swapped in Rajasthan mortuary; Hospital stops funeral to sort out confusion

The first family that arrived at the mortuary in fact took the body to the cremation center and placed it on the pyre for funeral. When the family members of the second victim arrived, the hospital administration realized their mistake.

Jaipur: Two dead bodies were swapped in the mortuary of Mathura Das Mathur Hospital (MDMH) in Jodhpur on Wednesday. Both the victims were killed in two different road accidents and the hospital administration released the body of one of the victims to the family members of the other victim.

The first family that arrived at the mortuary in fact took the body to the cremation centre and placed it on the pyre for funeral. When the family members of the second victim arrived, the hospital administration realized their mistake and brought the body back from pyre just minutes before the funeral was to be performed.

According to the Balesar police officials, a man – identified as Genu Singh, resident of
Khudiyala village of Jodhpur met with a road accident on Tuesday and died while undergoing treatment at MDMH. His dead body was kept in the mortuary after a postmortem examination.

Another man identified as Dokalram who is a truck driver also met with a road accident on December 4 and brought for treatment at MDMH. He died on Tuesday while undergoing treatment, according to Dewair police station of Rajsamand district.

The family members of deceased Genu Singh took his dead body from the mortuary to their village on Tuesday. They were about to perform last rites. However, the family members of Dokalram reached the hospital to claim the body from the mortuary. During identification, they found out that the body is not that of Dokalram. It was when the hospital administration realized its mistake.

It was soon clear that Dokalram’s body had been taken to Khudiyala village and Genu Singh’s body was in the mortuary.

The hospital administration blamed the family members of Genu Singh for this confusion and the deceased man’s relatives blamed the hospital staff for it.

A hospital team was immediately rushed to the cremation center along with police Jawans. The body of Dokalram was brought back to the mortuary and was released to his family members. Relatives of Genu Singh also claimed the other body and performed the funeral.
