Jodhpur communal violence: Curfew relaxed for 8 hours; 250 taken into custody

Jaipur: Five days after curfew was imposed in Jodhpur due to communal violence, the administration relaxed the curfew for eight hours on Sunday. Officials said that the situation was under control. The markets were allowed to open from 9 am to 5 pm.

The police have taken almost 250 people into custody in connection with the violence and rioting. The culprits are being identified based on CCTV footage. As many as 31 cases were registered by the police in different police stations of Jodhpur. More than 30 people have been booked under various sections related to rioting and violence, while interrogation with others is going on.

Internet services are still not operational in the city since the violence broke out. It has affected online studies and business. The administration has decided to continue the ban on mobile internet services in order to ensure that rumours are not spread on social media channels and WhatsApp.

On Sunday, the people ventured out of their homes in affected areas to shop for essential items. Dairy, grocery, medical and vegetable shops were open across the city.

A police officer said the further relaxations in the curfew would be considered if no untoward incident took place. He said that the law and order situation was now under control and several police teams have been formed to identify those who indulged in violence and rioting on Tuesday.
