Jaipur: The state government is all set to open the state’s first ever ‘Skin Bank’ in Rajasthan at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur. Officials said that the project will be completed in three months. The Skin Bank will save the lives of patients suffering from burn cases.

The work plan and the place for the bank at SMS hospital have been decided. This will be the country’s sixth and Rajasthan’s first Skin Bank, said a government official.

According to the officials, the work for the Skin Bank is going on for the last nine months and it will be completed soon. The state has several eye and blood banks but not Skin Bank.

Donated skins will be preserved in the skin bank at SMS. The development will prove beneficial for the state and the patients. Many lives could be saved in emergency burn cases.

Earlier, a stem cell bank was operated at SMS which was permanently closed due to department’s negligence, added officials.

According to Plastic Surgery Department head at SMS Sr Professor Dr Rakesh Jain, the chances of survival are less in most of the emergency burn cases. If the new skin could be covered in enough time then the chances of spreading infection are less. The skin bank at SMS will ensure the cure.

Sources said that the stem cell bank at SMS got closed due to the negligence of administration and health ministry of state.

Preserved cells from stem bank were used in the case of serious treatments. The stem bank started in the year 2007 at SMS and was closed after three years due to the administration negligence.
