Jaipur: Police jeep chasing drug smugglers mows down farmer, protests erupt

Jaipur: A police control room (PCR) vehicle downed a farmer in Dhundhar area of Jodhpur when it lost balance while chasing drug smugglers. The victim, identified as Dungarram Patelm, a resident of Rampura in Jodhpur, was rushed to a hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.

The villagers blocked a road demanding action against the policemen involved in the accident and a compensation for the family of the deceased farmer. The talks were on with the administration till late Friday night, but when no consensus was reached, the farmers and villagers decided to keep the markets closed in Dhundhar on Saturday.

The police received a tip-off on Friday afternoon that some people were smuggling poppy husk in a Bollero car. The SUV was spotted by some policemen in a PCR van stationed at Mogara village . They started chasing the car.

Near Dhundhar, the PCR van lost control and rammed into Dungarmal who had his tractor parked on the roadside. Dungarmal was seriously injured. The van driver, Ganesh, was also wounded in the accident. Both were rushed to a hospital where Dungarmal was declared dead on arrival.
