Petition filed in Rajasthan High Court seeking ban on Adipurush

JAIPUR: The troubles for Om Raut’s film, Adipurush, have intensified due to mounting controversies. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Rajasthan High Court, urging for a ban on the film and revocation of its certification.

The PIL, presented on behalf of Balmukundacharya from Hathoj Dham, has raised concerns regarding the portrayal of certain scenes in Adipurush that deviate from the original Ramayana.

The hearing for this case is expected to take place in the High Court next week.

Advocate Amitosh Pareek, representing Balmukundacharya in the PIL, stated that Adipurush is not simply a film inspired by the Ramayana but rather a movie entirely based on it.

According to Pareek, several scenes depicted in the film have no mention in the original Ramayana, which has caused distress among Hindus.

He further argued that the filmmakers have infringed upon the freedom of speech and expression. As a result, the PIL has been filed in the High Court, seeking a ban on the film and the cancellation of its certification. The petition also highlights that the film has faced a ban in Nepal.

The petition asserts that Adipurush is in violation of public decency and morality. The portrayal of characters such as Mata Janaki (Sita), Ravana, and others in the film has raised concerns about their dignity and morality being compromised.

The depiction has deeply hurt religious sentiments. In accordance with the Cinematography Act-1952 and Rules 1983, the certification of the film can be revoked even after its release.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcast, Government of India, the Censor Board, Government of Rajasthan, and the film’s producers have been named as respondents in the petition. Additionally, the petition calls for imposing hefty fines on the board members responsible for issuing the film’s release certificate.

The petition further highlights that objections extend beyond the film’s dialogues and encompass the illustrations as well. It claims that the portrayal of certain scenes in the film will also offend religious sentiments.

The petition also questions the authenticity of Laxman’s interrogation of Lord Rama and Hanuman during their first encounter, claiming that it lacks any historical basis.
