JAIPUR: A Jaipur-based jeweller, Ajay Kala, is in the custody of the Delhi customs department’s Preventive and Intelligence wing in connection with the case of gold smuggling, according to reports.
The jeweller was allegedly detained after about 10 kg of gold was found hidden in some machines imported by a firm, International Jewel Source located in SEZ of Sitapura Industrial Area. The jeweller is said to be in the custody of the Delhi customs department for the past four days and is being quizzed.
The family members were quoted as saying that the detention was unlawful as the company that imported the machines had been sold by him to someone who has left India.
The family members were quoted in a newspaper report saying that the company was sold in March last year for Rs 80 lakh. The buyer had already paid Rs 70 lakh. Since the company was headquartered in SEZ, 100% ownership couldn’t be transferred at once. The jeweller still held 20% ownership of the company. The buyer had however taken possession of the company and it was the buyer who ordered the machines, said family members.
