Jaipur: Five members of a family consumed some poisonous substance to commit suicide in the city’s Kardhani area on Wednesday. Four died, while one is battling for life at SMS Hospital.

It has come up during preliminary investigation that the head of the family, Dungarmal Jangir who was a property dealer, got his wife Suman (41), daughter Khushi (14), and sons Jitendra (21) and Dharmendra (16) to consume poison and then he committed suicide.

While four members of the family died, Dharmendra is undergoing treatment and his condition is stated to be critical. Jintendra was an engineering graduate and was planning to go to Dubai in the next few days.

The incident took place in Sarvodaya Enclave. A suicide note was also found. It mentions that Dungarmal was defrauded by a mahant (priest). He had borrowed a huge sum of money when he suffered losses in business. He gave some of the money to the priest, but the latter didn’t return it. Police said that he committed suicide due to financial distress.

Dungarmal had fled from his house to avoid lenders nearly two years ago after many cheques he had given to lenders bounced. His wife registered a missing person’s report with the police. Dungarmal returned after remaining six months in hiding.

According to the police, when no one opened the house door until 10 in the morning, Dungarmal’s sister and neighbors repeatedly knocked on the door. Dungarmal finally walked to the door in a semi-unconcious state and opened it.

Neighbors rushed Dungarmal, his wife Suman, daughter Khushi and sons Dharmendra and Jitendra to SMS Hospital where Suman, Jitendra and Khushi were pronounced dead on arrival. Dungarram and Dharmendra were admitted to hospital. Dungarmal too passed away. Dharmendra is in a critical condition.

The incident came to light when a lender turned up at Dungarmal’s doorstep to demand his money back. When he didn’t got any response, he went to the house of Dungarmal’s sister.

Dungarmal’s elder sister told the police she reached the house around 8 am, but no one opened the door. She assumed the children must have gone to school and college and the couple must be sleeping inside, hence she returned.

She then visited the house of her another brother Jagnish. He also tried calling Dungarmal’s mobile but no one answered.

Two hours later around 10 am, she went back to Dungarram’s house and rang the doorbell. When no one opened the door, she asked neighbors for help.

The neighbors found all of them lying unconscious and frothing at their mouths.

After Bhavri devi started shouting, the neighbors brought the five family members to SMS Hospital.

A suicide note was recovered from the spot. It mentioned a prest identifed as Vishambhardas.

It states Dungarmal had borrowed money from people and gave it to the priest who hails from Mahala.

Senior police officers said that Dungarram belonged to Nagor’s Deedwana village and had been living in Sarvodaya Enclave in Jaipur for the last 20 years. He was a property dealer.
