Jaipur e-rickshaws to require QR code, colour coding from May 3; operations restricted to assigned zones

Jaipur: E-rickshaws in Jaipur will not be permitted to operate on city roads from May 3 without a QR code and a designated colour code, under a new digital management system announced by the Police Commissionerate. Each vehicle will also be confined to running within an assigned zone.

Under the system, the city will be divided into multiple zones and every e-rickshaw will be allotted one zone in which it is allowed to operate. The move is intended to cut down on e-rickshaws bunching at the same locations and to ease the traffic congestion that has followed the unchecked growth of the sector.

RTO First Rajendra Singh Shekhawat said that once the system is in place, no e-rickshaw will be able to ply city roads without the QR code and the prescribed colour code. He said the objective is to organise traffic in Jaipur, rein in uncontrolled movement, and ensure a safe and smoother transport experience for passengers. About Rs 1.10 crore has already been sanctioned for the rollout.

The QR code affixed to each e-rickshaw will carry the full details of the vehicle and its driver. Officials said this will make monitoring easier for the police and the transport department and will allow immediate action against drivers found violating the rules.

Zone-wise camps will be set up across the city to handle registration and distribution of the codes. Transport department officers will be stationed at these camps to register e-rickshaw drivers and issue the QR codes.

Nodal officers will be appointed in the departments concerned to oversee the operation of the system. A dedicated enforcement team will also be formed to ensure compliance with the QR code and colour coding requirements, and will carry out on-ground monitoring.
