Jaipur: Curfew imposed in Ramganj, schools and colleges closed

Jaipur: Curfew was imposed in the Walled City areas including Ramganj, Manak Chwok, Subhash Chowk and Galta Gate following violent clashes between police and people of a community on Friday night. The curfew came into effect around 2 am on Saturday. The police have decided to continue with the curfew at least till Sunday morning. The police will assess the situation and then take a decision whether to give any relaxation if they are assured that the situation was under control. It is after a gap of nine years that curfew was imposed in the Walled City. It was in 2008 after the serial bomb blasts in the area when it happened last time.

DCP, north Satyendra Singh told media persons that the curfew will not be relaxed till at least Sunday morning.

“We will talk to representatives of the community and then decide whether to give any relaxation. The situation is under control now,” said the DCP.

All the government and private educational institutes remained closed till the morning. More than 5000 policemen were deployed in Ramganj, Manak Chwok, Subhash Chowk and Galta Gate areas to keep an eye on the law and order situation.

There are more than 40 private and government schools in these areas. More than 20000 students studying in these schools were affected by the curfew.

The gems and jewellery business in Ramganj, Manak Chowk and Subhash Chowk also came to a standstill. Nearly 50,000 people are employed with gems and jewellery manufacturing units and shops in the area. All these units and shops remained closed. More than 1500 shops also remained closed.

Battalions of STF, RAC and local police have been deployed in the area. Policemen carried out searches also at some places. Policemen in plainclothes have also been deployed. Intelligence agencies have been alerted.

The body of the man, Adil who was killed during the clashes, have been put in the mortuary of SMS Hospital.

On Friday, a mob touched a power house and five vehicles including an ambulance in a frenzy created by a minor incident of a youth being hit with a stick by a police constable of Ramganj police station.

The mob hurled stones on the police station and damaged more than 20 vehicles. The police fired tear gas and fired in the air to disperse the crowd. Curfew was imposed in the jurisdictional area of four police stations – Ramganj, Manak Chwok, Subhash Chowk and Galta Gate – in the city.

Police officials said that the situation was still tense, but under control.
