Jaipur Airport: Foreign national arrested for smuggling 1.5 kg gold

The gold was worth around Rs 45 lakh. This is the third case of gold smuggling reported over past few days. Customs department have seized more than 3 kg of gold in two of these cases, while Income Tax department also made a seizure of nearly 200 kg of gold and 3500 kg of silver worth Rs 76 crore from the air cargo last week.

Jaipur: The customs department arrested a foreign national for smuggling 1.520 kg of gold from Bangkok to Jaipur when he landed at the Jaipur International Airport on Wednesday.

The gold was worth around Rs 45 lakh. This is the third case of gold smuggling reported over past few days. Customs department have seized more than 3 kg of gold in two of these cases, while Income Tax department also made a seizure of nearly 200 kg of gold and 3500 kg of silver worth Rs 76 crore from the air cargo last week.

According to the customs officials, the accused was a citizen of Laos. He was identified as Sangfachan Vatsana. He landed at Jaipur airport from an Air Asia flight which departed from Bangkok.

When the accused came to the arrival lounge, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) jawans noticed his suspicious behavior. After the verification, four gold biscuits weighing about 1.520 kg were found in the socks of the accused. He was having trouble walking due to this.

The customs officials reached the spot for further investigation and arrested the man.

Earlier, the customs department seized 1.6 Kg of gold at Jaipur airport in a similar case reported on Monday. Four men who arrived from Bangkok in a ‘Thai smile’ flight were smuggling gold in form of jewellery.

The smuggling of gold from foreign countries is on the rise as several cases have been reported in the past few days.
