Internet ban in Jaipur after violent clashes in Ramganj area

Jaipur: The police administration suspended mobile internet services after clashes between police and people of a community killed a man and left more than 12 others injured in Jaipur’s Ramganj area on Friday night. The ban on internet will continue at least midnight on Sunday. While the internet services may resume in most parts of Jaipur, the ban will continue in 14 police station areas on Monday including Galta Gate, Nahargarh, Ashok Nagar, Jyoti Nagar, Kho Nagaurian, Subhash Chowk, Manak Chowk, Ramganj, Brahmpuri, Shashtri Nagar and Lalkothi.
Police officials said that the decision to stop internet services was taken to prevent the spread of rumours on social media sites including Facebook and WhatsApp. Watch this video to know the impact of curfew in Ramganj:
The police will make an assessment of the situation and will allow telecom companies to resume internet services only when they are assured that the situation is under control.
On Friday, a mob touched a power house and five vehicles including an ambulance in a frenzy created by a minor incident of a youth being hit with a stick by a police constable of Ramganj police station.
The mob hurled stones on the police station and damaged more than 20 vehicles. The police fired tear gas and fired in the air to disperse the crowd. Curfew was imposed in the jurisdictional area of four police stations – Ramganj, Manak Chwok, Subhash Chowk and Galta Gate – in the city.
Police officials said that the situation was still tense, but under control.
