Jaipur: A day after Rajasthan anti-terrorist squad (ATS) arrested the main suspect in the sensational murder of nurse and midwife Bhanwari Devi, officials said that changes in Indira Bishnoi’s appearance had been stunning.
Indira, the sister of former Congress MLA Malkhan Singh Bishnoi, was on Saturday produced in a court that sent her to 7 -day CBI remand. The CBI would interrogate her for her and others role in the murder case. She would also be quizzed about where she stayed throughout the period of her hiding, sources said.
Indira had adopted an alias. She was being called ‘Geetabai’ and became popular as ‘Jiji’, while while living as a destitute with a family in Nemawar area in Dewas in Madhya Pradesh. She also lost a lot of weight, her hair turned grayer and she went completely incommunicado, helping her stay out of the radar of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that is investigating the case.
It was nearly two months ago that the ATS had come to know that she was staying with a Jodhpur-based family. The family that was harbouring Indira was related to Indira’s family in a distance relationship.
Once Indira Bishnoi was traced, an ATS team went to Madhya Pradesh and with the help of their counterparts, they launched a search for her. At a first glance, the police couldn’t identify her even after tracing her.
She was about to leave for Omkareshwar when the ATS managed to confirm her identity.
Indira was popular in the area as a devout Shiv bhakta.
“She was detained on Friday night and has been brought to Jodhpur. She has been handed over to the CBI,” said an ATS officer.
The CBI would produce her in a court and may seek her custody for further interrogation.
Indira was allegedly behind setting in motion a series of events which eventually resulted in the brutal murder of Bhanwari Devi.
As per the chargesheet filed by the CBI in a Jodhpur court, Indira had first approached her sister-in-law to make a sleazing CD showing Mahipal Maderana, a prominent Jat leader in Jodhpur who was a cabinet minister in the previous Congress government, in a compromising situation.
Indira wanted to have Mahipal Maderana outed from the cabinet so that her brother Malkhan Singh Maderana could get a cabinet birth.
When the sister-in-law refused, Indira approached Bhanwari Devi who agreed to do the job.
Bhanwari, however, crossed Indira when she not only started Mahipal Maderana, but also Malkhan Singh Bishnoi. Malkhan had fathered Bhanwari’s younger daughter.
When Bhanwari Devi disappeared, the case was handed over to the CBI.
The agency revealed that Bhanwari had been brunt and her remains were thrown into a canal.
CBI arrested Malkhan, Mahipal Maderana and 13 others.
