Increase in gold smuggling through Jaipur airport puts agencies on alert

Jaipur: The increasing cases of gold smuggling through Jaipur International Airport have alarmed the security agencies. In the last 15 days, five cases of gold smuggling have been reported in which more than 200 kg of gold was seized.
Smugglers used different and methods to hide the gold from security forces. In one case, the smuggler kept the gold in his socks, while the other one was hiding it in sandals.
With the increasing number of cases, investigative agencies like DRI, CGST, Customs, Income Tax Department, Commercial Tax Department with CISF and airport authorities have been put on alert. The agencies are trying to bust the networks involved in gold smuggling.
Most of the gold is being smuggled from Arab countries. Domestic airlines have become a new hub for the smugglers to sneak gold illegally through Rajasthan.

- 200 kg of Gold with 4000 kg of Silver seized on August 14
This was the biggest seizure. The income tax department seized 200 kg of gold and 3500 Kg of silver worth Rs 76 crore from the air cargo at Jaipur Airport on August 14. The tax invasion of more than Rs 25 crore was detected.

- 1.6 Kg of gold seized on August 20
The customs department seized 1.6 Kg of gold at Jaipur airport on August 20. Four men who arrived from Bangkok in a ‘Thai smile’ flight to Jaipur airport were smuggling gold in the form of jewelry. They were taking this jewelry to Ahmedabad via Ajmer.

- 1.5 kg of gold seized on August 21
The customs department arrested a foreign national for smuggling 1.5 kg of gold from Bangkok to Jaipur when he landed at the Jaipur International Airport on August 21. The gold was worth around Rs 45 lakh.The accused was a citizen of Laos. After the verification, four gold biscuits weighing about 1.520 kg were found in the socks of the accused.

- 2 kg of gold seized on August 29
The customs department caught 2 kg of gold from a passenger. The gold was hidden in sandals.
