JAIPUR: Four vultures of Eurasian griffon species died while one was critically injured when a train hit them while they were sitting on the tracks.
The incident took place at the railway line near Gangaram ki Dhani in Dholiya village of Lathi town of Jaisalmer district. The place has become a death trap for the birds. The vultures were flying over the railway tracks when a train hit them.
Four birds died on the spot, while one was seriously injured. The local residents informed wildlife lover Radheshyam and the forest department. They rushed to the spot and took the carcasses of the vultures in their custody. An injured vulture was rescued for treatment and handed over to the forest department.
According to the information, about 150 vultures have lost their lives near the railway track over the last 2 years till now. These birds get stranded and are hit by trains while flying over railway tracks. While the forest department is making big claims for the safety of vultures included in the category of protected species, the reality is that no serious steps are being taken for their conservation.
