Foreign currency worth Rs 19 lakh seized in Jaipur

Jaipur: Customs department on Tuesday detained a man who was found in possession of foreign currency worth Rs 19 lakh at Jaipur International Airport in Sanganer area. The man was carrying 48 currency notes in the domination of 500 Euro each. He was to board a flight for Bangkok when he was searched.

The accused man was identified as Som Prakash Soni, a resident of Rawatsar area in Hanumangarh district. A Bangkok-bound Thai Smile flight was to take off at 2.15 am on Tuesday from the airport.

The passenger was going through the security check around 1.30 am when he was detained for interrogation based on his suspicious behavior.

Soni was found in possession of 48 currency notes – each in the domination of 500 Euro. The man is being interrogated by the customs officers.

Many cases of passengers trying to smuggle foreign currency and other valuables through Jaipur airport have come to fore recently.

In February, two passengers with foreign currency worth Rs 1.12 crore were seized from two passengers. Both the passengers identified as Javed and Naresh were going to Sharjah from Jaipur.  Similarly, two persons were detained by customs department in May for alleged smuggling of 300 grams of gold at the Jaipur airport. Both the passengers arrived from Dubai. In November, the Customs department detained a man at the Jaipur airport and recovered currencies of various countries, including India, amounting to Rs 96 lakh. The man was at the airport to catch a flight to Dubai.
