JAIPUR: In a significant breakthrough, the General Medicine Department team at Sawai Mansingh Hospital (SMS) in Jaipur successfully performed a bone marrow transplant on a patient with blood cancer.

This marks the first time that the medicine department has utilized this type of treatment for cancer patients, bringing new hope and benefits to those affected.

The procedure involved an allogeneic bone marrow transplant, which is known as one of the most complex transplants.

Healthy stem cells were extracted from the patient’s sibling and transferred into their body. These stem cells then started generating healthy blood cells, replacing the diseased ones and facilitating the development of a new immune system with anti-cancer capabilities.

Dr. Vishnu Sharma, a specialist in bone marrow transplantation and hematology at Sawai Man Singh Hospital, stated that they admitted a severely ill blood cancer patient to their unit. Initially, chemotherapy was administered to control the cancer. However, considering its severity, a bone marrow transplant was recommended as part of further treatment.

Dr. Vishnu Sharma emphasized that prior to performing the transplant procedure, thorough explanations about its intricacies were provided to both the patient and their family members who ultimately gave consent for it to proceed. He also highlighted that post-transplantation care is crucial due to significantly lowered levels of blood cells and platelets in patients during this period.

The treatment process follows predetermined protocols involving coordination among various departments within the hospital. Dr. Abhishek Aggarwal played an instrumental role in supporting this particular case alongside other esteemed members of the transplant team including Drs Ashutosh Rai, Kamlesh Rajpurohit, Kuldeep Shravata, and Harsh Saini.

It should be noted that SMS had previously conducted stem cell transplants for blood cancer patients back in November 2022 through collaboration between their Immuno Hematology and Transfusion Medicine Department along with Oncology Department staff members. Now breaking new ground once again by performing this treatment through the General Medicine Department, SMS Hospital continues to pioneer innovative approaches in combating blood cancer.
