Election for Jaipur mayor tomorrow; BJP JMC councillors confined to resort

The post of Jaipur mayor fell vacant when Ashok Lahoty was elected to the legislative assembly from the Sanganer constituency in Jaipur. Lahoty had to step down and was replaced by Manoj Bharwaj who was deputy mayors at that time.

Jaipur: The election for Jaipur mayor will be held on Tuesday. The nominations will be filed from 10 am, while the voting will take place from 2.30 pm. The results will come out by 5 pm.

The acting mayor is Manoj Bharwaj. He is likely to file nomination, but there were reports of a rift in various groups of BJP councillors. The party is making efforts to make them reach a consensus. Sources said that the councillors have been confined to a resort in the city where they are in touch with senior party leaders in Jaipur.

There are 16 contenders for the post from the BJP including Manoj Bhardwaj, Nirmal Nahata, Anil Sharma, Vishnu Lata, Satyanarayan Dhamani, Man Pandit, Rakhi Rathore, Kusum Yadav, Prakash Gupta, Bhagwat Singh Dewal, Ashok Garg, Mukesh Lakhyani, Navratna Naraniyan, Dinesh Aman, Bhanwar Singh and Gopal Krishna Sharma. Independent councillor Sunil Sharma is also claiming his candidature for the post of Jaipur mayor.

Who among these candidates will fight for the post will be decided in a meeting of councillors at a resort in Jaipur. Three names will be selected and one will be finalized.

The responsibility to make councillors agree on a candidate has been given to Amer MLA Satish Punia and Jaipur district incharge Rajendra Gehlot. Both reached the resort located on Ajmer Road on Sunday evening.
