DRI seizes 2.5 kg gold at Jaipur airport; 3 arrested

The trio was produced in a court that remanded them in judicial custody. The gold is worth about Rs 1.30 crore.

JAIPUR: The directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) has arrested a man at Jaipur Airport while he was attempting to smuggle 2.5 kg of gold into India. Two others who were to take the delivery of the gold outside the airport were also held.

The trio was produced in a court that remanded them in judicial custody. The gold is worth about Rs 1.30 crore.

The man had arrived at Jaipur airport on an Air Arabia flight. He was searched on suspicion and was found in possession of 2.5 kg gold. The gold was concealed in an electronic hammer.

It came up during the preliminary investigation that the man was to deliver the gold to two people who were waiting outside the airport. The DRI teams were rushed to search the areas outside the airport. The smuggler was accompanying the team and helped the officials trace the two men. The duo was also taken into custody, sources said.

The smuggling attempt took place on July 30. The man had landed at Jaipur airport at 4.30 am.

DRI has seized about 15 kg of gold at Jaipur airport in the past 3 months and arrested 9 people for smuggling. Some of the smugglers were foreign nationals.
