Dholpur man arrested for demanding Rs 20 lakh extortion from jeweller

Jaipur: Police in Dholpur district have arrested a 22-year-old man within 48 hours of a bullion trader in Bari reporting that an unidentified caller, posing as an underworld don, had allegedly demanded Rs 20 lakh in protection money and threatened to kill him and his family if the amount was not paid.

According to the FIR, Mohanlal Mittal, 53, a jeweller of Chhapeti Pada in Bari, lodged a report at the Bari Kotwali police station on 29 May. He told police he had received a threatening call on his mobile phone at about 9.15 am that day, in which the caller demanded Rs 20 lakh as “chauth” and abused him, followed by a second call minutes later repeating the threat to have him killed. The case was registered as FIR No. 165/2026 under Section 308(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Superintendent of Police Vikas Sangwan said three teams were formed at the police station level to trace the caller. Using technical evidence and human intelligence, investigators identified the accused as Amit Kumar Gurjar, son of Rambaran Singh, a resident of Bada Manpur under Kolari police station, and arrested him near Manpur Mod within 48 hours of the complaint. The mobile phone allegedly used in the crime was recovered from him.

The accused had allegedly used the phone of Suman Kumar, a youth from his own village, and had posed as an underworld don while making the threatening calls, police said.

During questioning, the accused allegedly told police that the dispute stemmed from advance money paid about three months earlier for making wedding jewellery, which had led to a disagreement between him and the trader, according to police.

SP Sangwan had directed action against wanted criminals in serious cases, under which the arrest was made. Police said a constable identified as Rajendra played a key role in tracing and arresting the accused, and that further investigation is underway.
