Jaipur: The District Special Team (DST) of Dholpur police on Wednesday arrested Amardas alias Amrutdas, a Rs 20,000 reward absconder, from Rajkot in Gujarat — over two years after he walked out of the open prisoners’ camp attached to Dholpur jail in January 2024. According to the police, the accused had been working at a Polycon company in Rajkot under a changed name and altered appearance.
Superintendent of Police Dholpur Vikas Sangwan, IPS, said Amardas was serving a life sentence for the murder of a sadhu in the Ramgarh Pachwara area of Dausa district. He had been convicted on August 18, 2018 by the Additional District and Sessions Judge, Lalsot (Dausa) under Sections 302 and 309 of the IPC.
Amardas was transferred from the open camp at Sanganer in Jaipur to the open prisoners’ camp attached to Dholpur jail on December 2, 2023. On January 9, 2024 he failed to appear at the daily attendance and disappeared, prompting jail warden Jadveer Singh (Belt No 621) to lodge an FIR at PS Kotwali under Section 224 IPC. A charge sheet under Section 299 of the CrPC was subsequently filed against him in the court.
Officers said the DST team had been on his trail for around three months. They first traced him to a temple at his native village Bihani in Bhind, where he had allegedly been living disguised as a sadhu, but he managed to flee during a raid. A fresh tip-off received by Head Constable Deendayal (No 08) eventually led the team to the Polycon factory in Rajkot, where the accused was picked up on April 29.
The arresting team, led by DST in-charge Sub-Inspector Ghanshyam Singh, included Head Constable Deendayal, Constables Ramchandra (805), Narendra Singh (134), Komal Singh (1066) and driver-constable Dilip Singh (965), along with Bharat Singh of PS Kotwali Dholpur. The operation was supervised by Additional SP Vaibhav Sharma and Circle Officer (Dholpur) Krishna Kumar Jangid, with overall guidance from Inspector General (Bharatpur Range) Kailash Chand Bishnoi. Police said further interrogation is under way.
