Jaipur: The BJP on Sunday appointed Gulab Chand Kataria as the opposition of leader in the Rajasthan assembly. The decision to appoint 74-year-old Gulab Chand Kataria was taken during a meeting of BJP legislator. Kataria was elected unopposed, however the MLAs first proposed the name of former chief minister Vasundhara Raje. Rajendra Singh Rathore was made deputy leader of opposition.
Raje, union finance minister Arun Jaietly and several other senior leaders were present during the meeting. When her name was proposed, Raje thanked the legislator and then proposed the name of Gulab Chand Kataria. Kataria was then elected unopposed.
There were concerns whether Kataria would be able to fulfil his duties due to his old age. Kataria then appointed Rathore as the deputy leader of opposition.
The first session of the 15th Rajasthan assembly will be held from Tuesday. The assembly will be in session for nine days till January 23. The newly elected legislators will take the oath on the first day and then the assembly speaker will be elected.
Several bills are likely to be introduced including the bill to abolish the minimum education qualification for municipal body elections and the direct election of chairpersons of municipal bodies.
Senior Congress leader CP Joshi and former speaker Deependra Singh Shekhawat are the front runners for Rajasthan assembly speaker.
