Jaipur: A 16-year-old coaching student, identified as Shipra Ranjan, allegedly committed suicide by jumping into Chambal river in Kota on Wednesday. Panic gripped the area as many people saw her jumping into the river.
They informed the police following which rescue teams were rushed to the spot. Despite all the efforts, the girl could not be rescued. Her body was fished out of the river and put in the mortuary of a government hospital for a postmortem examination.
The girl, Shipra, was a resident of Madhubani district in Bihar and was attending coaching classes in Kota. She was living in a paying guest facility in Kunhari area in Kota. She was pursuing NEET coaching from ALLEN Career Institute in Kota, police officials said.
According to preliminary reports, the girl's brother Abhishek, had come to Kota to see her on Wednesday; however when he arrived in the town, he got the news of his sister's death.
The girl jumped into the river near Adharshila Dargah around 7 am. Locals informed the police following which a team of divers rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation.
“We tried to pull her out but by the time the divers could find her, she had drowned. We have informed the family members. While her brother is already in Jaipur, her parents are on their way. A postmortem examination will be conducted in their presence,” said a police officer
The police have launched an investigation into the matter and said that the statement of her friends, teachers and hostel mates will be recorded to know as to what caused the girl to take the extreme step. The police officials said that no suicide note was recovered.
"Prima-facie it seems to be a suicide case, but further investigation is going on," said a police officer adding that as per her family members and teachers, the girl was very bright in studies.
Several incidents of suicides by coaching students have been reported in Kota in the recent past.
