JAIPUR: Independent MLA from Dudu constituency Babulal Nagar courted controversy on Tuesday when he warned people not to raise slogans in favour of anybody except for Rajiv Gandhi and Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot. Nagar is currently Gehlot’s advisor also.

“The cops would lock you up if you chant slogans in favour of anybody except for the two,” Nagar went on to say while addressing a gathering during the inauguration of the Block Level Rural Olympic Sports Competition at Dubu. Nagar was referring to Deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot. Chief minister Ashok Gehlot reached the venue moments after the statement made by Nagar.

Naga said, “no one will raise slogans of anyone, I have told you about these two slogans – Rajiv Gandhi Zindabad, Ashok Gehlot zindabad. If you want to raise a slogan in favour of any third person, you can leave.”

Babulal Nagar is considered close to Gehlot. He was a cabinet minister in the previous Ashok Gehlot government. He had to languish behind bars when a woman accused him of rape, but he was later acquitted. In the 2018 assembly elections, Nagar was not given a ticket by Congress, so he contested as an independent.

In the meeting held before the assembly elections, Ashok Gehlot who was Congress general secretary at that time had appealed to the voters to get Nagar elected.

It is believed that Nagar made this statement because Sachin Pilot has a huge following of supporters in Dudu. Nagar feared sloganeering by Pilot supporters.

No Pilot supporters were allowed to attend the meeting Dubu due to the incident of shoes being tossed during the speech of Minister Ashok Chandna in Pushkar on Monday.
