Jaipur: The Poornima Group transformed its campus into a haven of music and mysticism on Friday night as it hosted “Bismil Ki Mehfil,” a mesmerizing Sufi evening that marked the beginning of its three-day hostel fest. The event featured acclaimed Indian Sufi artist Bismil, whose heartfelt renditions and poetic depth captivated hundreds of students and faculty, wrapping the campus in an aura of devotion, rhythm, and soulful harmony.
Currently on a nationwide tour under the same title, “Bismil Ki Mehfil,” the singer has been widely recognized for reviving Sufi music with a contemporary touch. His Jaipur performance showcased not only his exceptional vocal artistry but also his ability to connect deeply with the audience — blending passion, poetry, and spiritual expression into one seamless experience.
The evening began on a lighter note with a stand-up act by comedian Praveen Kumar (PK Mast), who set the mood with his sharp wit and relatable humor. His quick one-liners and playful commentary on student life drew laughter across the auditorium, perfectly warming up the crowd for the night’s main act.
When Bismil took the stage, the atmosphere turned electric yet serene. Opening with the evocative verse “Sochta hoon ke woh kitne masoom the, kya se kya ho gaye dekhte-dekhte,” he held the audience spellbound from the very first note. He followed it with moving renditions of beloved songs including “Kam se Kam Itna Kehna Hamara Karo,” “Ye Tune Kya Kiya,” and “Tose Naina Jab Se Mile.” Each performance drew loud applause, cheers, and moments of emotional stillness — proof of the deep connection his music evoked.
Bismil’s tribute to the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was among the night’s highlights. His modern interpretation of Nusrat’s timeless Sufi compositions brought both reverence and freshness, earning him a standing ovation. As the performance unfolded, it became clear that this was more than a concert — it was an experience of spiritual communion through music.
Addressing the gathering, Ashwini Lata, Director (Student Welfare), and Architect Rahul Singhi, Director of Poornima Group, shared inspiring words with hostel residents. They spoke about the importance of art, balance, and community life, weaving in light-hearted anecdotes from their own hostel days that drew smiles and laughter from students.
