Automated driving track at RTO proves hard nut to crack for license applicants

Jaipur: The recently introduced automated driving track at Jagatpura RTO office in Jaipur is likely to be a big challenge for driving license applicants. Even the skilled drivers are finding it difficult to get through the four phases of the license trial. The track was used on a pilot project basis over the last two days and 90 percent of the applicants flunked the test.

“Nearly 60 people were asked to test their driving skills on the track. Almost 52 people failed the test,” said a senior RTO officer.

The track is sensor equipped, causing people to fail on the account of even small mistakes.

The applicants go through four phases of the trial. In the first phase, they have park the vehicle parallel and in an angular angle in 30 seconds. In the second phase, they need to drive forward and in reserve on an 8-shaped track in just 30 seconds. In the third phase, they get 70 seconds to drive on an H-shaped track while following all the traffic rules. In the fourth phase, the applicant needs to drive on an elated track with a height of up to 5 feet. If the driver couldn’t control the vehicle for 20 seconds, the sensors will go off.

Cameras automatically record the mistakes made by an applicant. The marks are reduced on the basis of the number of mistakes.

Since the driving skills is evaluated based on a sensor technology there is no involvement of human judgement. It will not only ensure that only skilled drivers get the license, but also eradicate corruption, senior RTO officers said.
