Jaipur: Putting to rest speculations, Rajasthan Congress on Sunday nominated Raghu Sharma as its candidate for Ajmer bypolls in Rajasthan, within a few hours of BJP announcing the name of Ramswaroop Lamba for the constituency.

Raghu Sharma is a former MLA and chief whip in the state assembly. His name had been finalized a few days ago, but the Congress was waiting for the BJP to declare the names of its candidates. As soon as BJP announced its list of candidates for bypolls, the Congress followed suit.

Raghu Sharma’s name was finalized in a recent meeting in New Delhi. The meeting was attended by senior Congress leaders including state president Sachin Pilot.

Sharma will now be pitted against Ramswroop Lamba, the son of prominent Jat leader MP Sanwar Mal Jat who died of cardiac arrest in August.

Sharma is facing a tough battle as BJP will try to garner sympathy votes by fielding Sanwar Mal Jat’s son.

Raghu Sharma had been an MLA from Kekari assembly constituency from 2008-2013. He has fought election from Jaipur parliamentary constituency also.

The polling will take place on January 29, while the counting of votes on February 2.
