JAIPUR: Rajasthan anti-corruption bureau (ACB) on Wednesday arrested a patwari, Birbal Ram, in Jodhpur after he was caught red-handed taking a bribe of Rs 25 lakh. The accused patwari was demanding the money to provide the ACB complainant some documents related to a piece of land.

ACB officials said that one Manoj Gwala, a resident of Maderna Colony in Jodhpur, approached the agency and registered a complaint. In the complaint, he stated that he owned land measuring 2 bighas 5 biswa in Bhadwasia, Poonjla area. To provide documents related to this land, Magra Punjala patwari Bibrbal Ram was demanding the bribe.

Patwari had already taken Rs 50,000 in the name of mutation. But when he learned that the ACB complainant was selling the land for crores of rupees, he got greedy. He even demanded a plot, but when the ACB complainant refused, he demanded a bribe of Rs 25.80 lakh.

After the complaint was verified, the ACB officials laid a trap. Manoj went to Patwari on Wednesday and handed over dummy notes. As soon as the patwari accepted the bribe, the ACB team arrested him and booked him under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The ACB teams are carrying out searches at the house, office and other places belonging to the patwari. “Further investigation is going on,” said an officer.
