Jaipur: The directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) on Friday seized gold biscuits weighting 4.5 kg at Jaipur International Airport on Friday. A South Korea national was arrested for attempting to smuggle the gold, said to be worth about Rs 2 crore. Interrogation with the alleged smuggler was being conducted till the reports last came in. Sources said that the accused man was trying to flee to Jodhpur with the gold.
Sources said that the man had boarded a domestic flight to Jaipur from Ahmedabad. When the flight landed at Jaipur airport, he was searched by DRI investigators as they already had a tip-off about the smuggling attempt.
It is believed that the gold had been smuggled from Bangkok by a gang of smugglers. The South Korean national was asked to collect the gold from under a passenger seat of a domestic flight on Friday. The smugglers first smuggled the gold into India from Bangkok in an international flight and then put the gold under a seat of the Jaipur-Ahmedabad flight. The South Korean national got the same seat number and retrieved the gold from there.
He was taken into custody when he landed at Jaipur Airport. The agencies are investigating who was to get the supply of the smuggled gold.
