Jaipur: The customs department seized around 2 kg gold from two passengers at Jaipur International Airport on Monday. The gold is estimated to be worth about Rs 64 lakh. The two men came to Jaipur from Bangkok. They had coloured the gold in black to confuse the security personnel.

According to the customs officials, the suspects came to the notice of security personnel due to their suspicious behavior. They landed from a flight which arrived from Bangkok in the morning. After the security check, around 2 kg of gold worth Rs 64 lakh, coated with black paint was found with them.

The accused coated the gold with black paint to trick the investigative agencies but in vain.

The customs department took the two into custody for interrogation.

More than 200 kg of gold was seized at the Jaipur Airport over the past months. Smugglers used different methods to hide the gold from security forces. In one case, the smuggler kept the gold in his socks, while the other one was hiding it in sandals.

With the increasing number of cases, investigative agencies like DRI, CGST, Customs, Income Tax Department, Commercial Tax Department with CISF and airport authorities have been put on alert. The agencies are trying to bust the networks involved in gold smuggling.
